This vintage wool shears is a rare Japanese farming implement crafted in the early 20th century, designed specifically for wool shearing by Hokkaido pioneers. Measuring H11.8 inches (30 cm) tall, W3.3 inches (8.5 cm) wide, and D1.6 inches (4 cm) deep, this antique sheep shears weighs 10.7 oz (304 g) and is made of durable steel. These big wool scissors were signed with Kanji characters, authenticating their origin and use as a Hokkaido pioneer tool during Japan’s expansion into sheep farming to meet the military demand for wool in cold climates. Despite their size, modeled after American designs, these functional vintage scissors exhibit a balance of strength and precision that made them essential for early 20th century shears work.

This pair of Japanese wool scissors offers:

- Steel construction ensuring long-lasting sharpness and resilience

- Large size for efficient wool clipping on sheep

- Signed Kanji scissors verifying authenticity and historical significance

- Provenance as a Hokkaido pioneer tool used in the development of Japan’s northern frontier

- A unique blend of American design influence and traditional Japanese craftsmanship

- Well-preserved condition with minor scratches and dirt consistent with age

These wool shearing scissors reflect a pivotal moment in Japanese agricultural history when sheep farming was introduced to Hokkaido to supply wool for military expeditions against Russia in 1904. Although clippers were common abroad, these scissors were carefully handled by pioneers who valued their functional beauty and reliability. The steel wool clippers demonstrate the practical needs of vintage farming tools adapted to Japan’s unique climate and terrain.

Condition notes: The scissors are in good vintage condition with expected signs of wear such as small scratches and dirt from decades of use. They remain fully functional as a collector’s piece or for light use.
