Vintage Kokeshi Doll, Wooden Japanese Girl, Cherry Blossom 7.7In.

Handcrafted from solid wood, this Vintage Kokeshi Doll captures traditional Japanese charm with cherry blossom motifs painted against a deep purple base and an asymmetrical bob hairstyle that tilts toward a gentle, downward smile. The wooden Japanese girl measures 7.7 inches tall and sits light enough for shelf displays or mantel vignettes, weighing just 7.5 ounces. Collectors and gift shoppers will appreciate the doll’s modest wear consistent with age, including fine surface scratches and light staining that reflect decades of handling. The compact silhouette and subdued palette make it easy to pair with modern or classic interiors and styled displays.

Appearance and craftsmanship

This Kokeshi doll presents a simple, cylindrical body and a rounded head typical of classic kokeshi proportions, with hand-painted floral details concentrated across the torso. The cherry blossom motif is applied in muted tones that complement the deep purple background, and the face is rendered with a restrained, downward-tilted smile that gives the piece a calm, introspective character. Grain and tool marks in the wood are visible on close inspection and contribute to the doll’s authentic, handcrafted appearance.

Condition and care

The listing describes the doll as in good vintage condition; you will find surface scratches, small spots of dirt, and light wear from handling over time. These signs are consistent with age and add to the object’s provenance as a collected folk-art piece. To care for the wood and paint, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, keep the doll in a stable, dry environment, and gently dust with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use solvents, polishes, or water that might affect the painted surface.

History and provenance

Kokeshi have been sold as souvenirs at hot spring resorts in the Tohoku region since the late Edo period, and this example follows that lineage of regional folk craft. While specific maker marks are not provided, the doll’s style and wear align with traditional production methods: turned wood bodies, hand-painted motifs, and simplified facial features. The piece is suitable for collectors who appreciate everyday antiques from Japan and for interior decorators seeking a small piece of cultural history.

Display and gift ideas

At 7.7 inches tall, this wooden Japanese girl fits easily on narrow shelves, in curio cabinets, or on desk risers. Pair the Kokeshi with complementary ceramics, framed woodblock prints, or a small vase of branches to highlight the cherry blossom theme. Given its compact size and vintage character, the doll also makes a thoughtful gift for collectors of Japanese folk art, lovers of minimalist décor, or anyone who appreciates handcrafted wooden objects.
