Vintage Kokeshi Doll, Wooden Japanese Girl, Bob Hair, (8.7in/22cm)

A hand-carved silhouette with an okappa haircut exemplifies the vintage kokeshi doll, highlighting the warm grain and tactile finish of this 22 cm wooden figure crafted as a sousaku kokeshi figure. Made from solid wood, the minimalist wood sculpture retains natural tones where paint is omitted, offering an authentic Japanese decor accent that suits mid century home decor or boho interior accent schemes. At roughly 8.7 inches tall and weighing about 418 g, the doll reads as both collectible folk art and a practical, unique bookshelf decor item for lovers of traditional wood carving. Perfect for gifting or display anywhere.

Details

This is a traditional-style kokeshi produced in the creative or sousaku kokeshi tradition; some modern elements like the okappa haircut and simplified painted motifs appear alongside areas left unpainted so the wood grain is visible. The piece reflects techniques associated with traditional wood carving and the souvenir history of kokeshi sold at hot spring resorts in the Tohoku region since the late Edo period. The unvarnished sections and subtle floral pattern on the dress emphasize natural texture and a minimalist aesthetic.

Condition & care

The doll is in good condition for its age, but it shows light to moderate scratches and surface dirt from normal aging; these marks are consistent with a vintage collectible. Clean gently with a soft, dry cloth; avoid solvents or water that could affect the wood or any remaining pigments. Keep out of direct sunlight and extreme humidity to preserve the wood and painted details.

Styling & uses

As authentic Japanese decor, this kokeshi integrates easily into mid century home decor, boho interior accent schemes, or minimalist displays. Use it as a unique bookshelf decor accent, a focal point on a mantel, or as part of a curated shelf of japanese wooden dolls and other collectible folk art. It also functions well as a thoughtful handmade artisan gift or a special kokeshi souvenir for someone who appreciates traditional wood carving and creative kokeshi figures.
