This hanging scroll depicts a white camellia and a small bird in ink wash painting.
It bears the signature “呉春Goshun.” He was a Kyoto-based painter active from the mid- to late Edo period. Studying under renowned artists like Yosa Buson and Maruyama Ōkyo, he went on to form a school known as the Shijō-ha. Characterized by approachable realism, his soft style produced many paintings that resonated with people's daily lives.
This painting exemplifies those characteristics well. The negative space is beautifully Japanese, rendered with soft, sparse lines.
Camellias are also very commonly used as flowers to decorate tea rooms. Therefore, instead of displaying camellia flowers, hanging this scroll is a recommended way to express the slightly early arrival of spring.
The mounting was redone around the Meiji period, so it is in good condition. It comes in a wooden box, making it a recommended gift.
This is called KAKEJIKU a hanging scroll, and is a calligraphy or oriental painting on silk or paper.
In Japan, masters store various types of hanging scrolls. And he hangs a drawing scroll which represents the season and calligraphy scrolls which implies his feelings or message to his guests.
Another good point is that it can be rolled up and stored compactly. This is especially recommended for tea rooms.
Many people say that when they enter a tea room, the first thing they see is the hanging scroll, which is closely related to the tea ceremony. Kakejiku is said to be the most important utensil in a tea ceremony room, and most of them have Zen words written on them to express the "Zen culture" that is the basis of the tea ceremony.
