Vintage Japanese Bronze Temple Bell, Dragon Stand set, Buddhist Instrument (H7.7in/H19.5cm)

A small antique set combines a bronze bell, dragon stand, and shumoku mallet for a personal ritual: the japanese bronze temple bell brings resonant temple tone into a home meditation altar. Crafted in bronze alloy with iron and wood elements, the bonsho bell shows reliefs of dragons, Buddha, and tennyo softened by age, embodying wabisabi antiques. At H 7.7in (19.5cm) and 544g, the vintage home decor piece is compact enough for zen ritual instrument use while remaining a genuine Buddhist gong and buddhist altar supply that’s ready to play. Its weathered patina enhances calm and authenticity and quiet resonance.

Details

This set is an antique bell ensemble made for personal reverence or display. The bell’s reliefs depict dragons, a seated Buddha, and tennyo (celestial maidens), motifs common in traditional Japanese temple metalwork. The dragon stand bell pairs sculptural ironwork with the bronze bonsho bell in a compact form that suits a small altar or shelf. The shumoku mallet is wooden and sized for hand use, allowing the bell’s tone to ring clearly without additional hardware.

Sound and Use

Strike the bell gently with the shumoku mallet to produce a clear, lingering tone characteristic of Buddhist gongs. As a buddhist gong and meditation altar bell, it punctuates zen practice, chanting, and breathing exercises; the sound supports focus and the contemplative atmosphere of a home shrine. Consider placement on a stable surface or small altar pad to protect furniture and to let the bell’s peaceful sound decor resonate fully.

Condition & Care

The set is described as in good antique condition; surface rust on the iron stand and softened relief details reflect decades of aging and contribute to its wabi-sabi character. Clean gently with a dry cloth; avoid abrasive cleaners or prolonged moisture exposure that could affect the bronze and iron. For display, keep away from direct sunlight and high humidity to preserve patina and prevent further corrosion. The bell is ready to use as received.

Provenance & Meaning

Historically used in temples to mark time and call communities to services, bonsho bells were also believed to help listeners transcend suffering. This smaller-scale example translates that tradition into a vintage home decor object that doubles as a functional ritual instrument and japanese metal art collectible. Its symbolism aligns with the Buddhist idea of impermanence—shogyo mujo—visible in the bell’s weathered surfaces.
