"Suiseki" is a Japanese culture or hobby of viewing stones indoors.

This culture came from China in the 12th century, and getting popular among noble and samurai society.

They preferred and collected stones which resembles mountain and made a small landscape scenery in a tray filled with water. It has something in common with "bonsai" and "suiseki" are also displayed in "tokonoma", an alcove in a traditional Japanese room where art pieces are displayed.

A unique characteristic of Suiseki is often its "mitate"—suggesting something else to the mind. This usually takes the form of a distant mountain, but this stone resembles no mountain. Its round base prevents it from standing on its own, and if you place it on a flat surface, it would simply roll—a deliberate and unstable form that powerfully evokes the image of the Zen monk Bodhidharma.

Additionally, this piece features a white depression, one of the key highlights of a Suiseki, known as a "tamari." In a stone with a conventional mountain shape, such a depression would surely be seen as a serene pool or pond. But with this stone, what does it become?

There is a Zen words called Shakuji Myori (借事明理), which means "using phenomenal events to illuminate ultimate truth." It teaches us that the visible world is merely a tool or a catalyst for understanding the essence of reality. Rather than letting our emotions swing based on surface appearances, we must discern the deeper truth beneath them. This stone may well be the embodiment of that very teaching.

The stand is exceptionally masterfully crafted from extraordinarily hard Karaki (exotic hardwood), hand-carved to perfectly conform to the precise contours of the stone's base. Even the countless chisel marks left on its surface contribute to its captivating beauty.
