Set of 5 red gold lacquer MAKIE wooden sake cups with bards crane, Japanese Antique 1920s"sakazuki" with wooden box W8-5.1in H2.8-1.6in

This is a beautiful set of five cups made of wood and lacquer.
There is no major damage to any of them and they are ready to use.

This set was originally intended for weddings, events, and other celebratory occasions.
In Japan, drinking sake from a sake cup is called "sakazukigoto," and is meant to strengthen the bonds between people who are not related by blood.
The act of drinking together has been used in Japan since the Middle Ages to deepen unity. It was also used to unite revolts in Japan.

Basically, it is a courtesy to drink all the sake that is poured.
In fact, it has also been used as a pedestal to hold water and sometimes trophies.

This design shows five different patterns of cranes flying among clouds. A crane is a symbol of marital bliss because of the nature of cranes to stay together for life once they become a couple, and have been used in many wedding ceremonies.

From a technical standpoint, observing this sake cup reveals an intricate depiction of cranes, where the feather patterns are distinctively rendered, and variations in gold tones are employed to create a multi-layered, richer expression. Furthermore, the use of the Taka-makie (raised maki-e) ,sophisticated maki-e technique used to create three-dimensional designs on lacquerware clearly indicates the immense time and effort generously invested in its creation.
