RARE! 1800s Japanese furniture Antique doll Hibachi brazier charcoal Fire Holder DARUMA Oribe ware buddhist monk EDO craft 10.9in/27.6cm.

This is not just a doll; it is a small brazier called a teabori. It has long been an important piece of winter furniture in Japan. This type of furniture has been used since the Nara period (710-794).
In Japan, store keepers and others used a brazier for one person to warm themselves in the old days.

The motif is a glaring 達磨 DARUMA monk. "Daruma" is a Buddhist monk who introduced Buddhism from India to China.
It was made by imitating the appearance of "Daruma " in a sort of meditation"zazen".
"zazen" is to correct the posture by cross-legging and unite the spirit at the border of relentless dreaming.

Tthis daruma is a very old pottery made around the early to mid-Edo period (1603– 1868). The distinctive feature is the eyes. One eye is glazed and the other eye is left as clay. The difference between the left and right eyes gives it a unique aura. It is also a rare piece of pottery, and although it is said to be Oribe ware, the characteristic green glaze of Oribe is not visible. The overall color has become quite austere and deep with age.
The balance between the parts that are still clay and those that are glazed is also unique.
A very old brazier with an overall dharma design like this is rare and valuable.
It is impressive just to display it as a doll.
