This is a small Bizen ware figurine modeled after a Zen monk Daruma doll.
There is a certain sweetness to its sharp, piercing gaze, and its small size is also appealing. The color is a reddish-brown gradient.
It is an old piece made between the Meiji and Taisho periods, with a deep color that exudes dignity.
Though small, it is impactful and cool. You can see different expressions depending on the angle from which you view it.
The "Daruma" motif refers to the monks who brought Buddhism from India to China. They are also known as Zen masters. Their relaxed posture is also lovely.
It comes in a paper box and makes a great gift.
