These have been used as horse bells since ancient times and are called 馬鈴 balei.
The distinctive doughnut-shaped bells contain a “ball” inside, which rolls around inside the ring and hits something.
The vibration caused by the ball hitting the ring causes the entire ring to resonate. Even if the horse bell is touching clothing, the parts not in contact with other objects vibrate and produce sound.
The sound is extremely beautiful, pleasant to the ear, and ideal for meditation.
