Japanese antique Karatsu Matcha tea bowl, Bold Gold Kintsugi, 17th century (W4.3in/W11cm)

This is a small, black Karatsu ware matcha tea bowl made in the early Edo period. It's striking how it was boldly repaired using kintsugi (gold repair) despite being heavily cracked.
Kintsugi is a repair technique using lacquer and gold leaf.
The glaze has areas known as "mushi-tsuki" (worm holes), which indicate areas where the glaze was not applied properly.
Although the color is black, it has a deep hue that gives off a hint of brown.
Another characteristic of Karatsu ware is that this area, known as the takadai (foot), is made relatively precisely.

This tea bowl is the opposite of perfect. However, gazing at it, especially with matcha poured into it, brings its beauty to the forefront. Repairing old things to discover new beauty is an aesthetic unique to Japan.
