Hand carved bear were known as typical souvenirs in Hokkaido, the northern island in Japan.
Its story began around 1900 when the head of Hokkaido brought it from the Switzerland. He encouraged farmers to make souvenirs during winter when there were less job due to heavy snow. Though there are a lot of kinds of wild animals such as fox, rabbit deer, crane in Hokkaido, bear had been believed as god in woods or mountain. Bears sometimes destroyed villages where people had no guns but only farm tools to pioneer land, but people had watched them with awe and love.

Each work leaves different impression. Some look horrific, some looks charming. This work would give lovely one, a small bear looks up with his hand pushing salmon down on the ground. In spite this motif if popular, the artist made this unique by putting it between two slices of wood whose cross-section looks like an orange. This helps it to be pedestal or kid’s chair.
