This handcrafted wood board includes a wooden case and a full set of 181 black nachiguro stones and 180 white clam shell pieces, each with solid thickness and a smooth finish; the board has minor edge scratches and some discoloration on the back but remains sound and richly grained.

Materials & craftsmanship

The board is carved from a single piece of Japanese Katsura, a slow-grown tree noted here for nearly 200 annual rings and undulating grain similar to Hon Kaya. The density and weight create a pronounced, satisfying click when playing, a quality prized in traditional weiqi equipment. Black stones are Nachiguro and white stones are made from clam shell; both types are described as smooth, thick, and well-finished.

Dimensions, presence, and placement

At roughly H 23 cm × W 45.2 cm × D 41.5 cm and weighing 14.8 kg, the board functions as a serious gameplay surface and as an oriental interior accent or aged floor decor piece. Its scale and graining make it suitable as a low side table or display object among antique collectibles and luxury strategy board collections.

Condition & care

Surface photos show the board’s play face is beautiful with only minor edge scratches; the back has some discoloration consistent with age. Stones are handmade; expect slight variations in thickness and shape. To care for the Katsura Wood Goban, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and extreme humidity; wipe with a soft, dry cloth and store stones in their wooden case when not in use.

Why collectors choose this board

Collectors of vintage arts and handcrafted wood gifts seek pieces like this for authentic materials, clear provenance of craft, and longevity—qualities that align with durable game gear and traditional Japanese game sets. The combination of a single-piece katsura board and full nachiguro and clam shell stones makes this set notable for both play and display.
