For tea rooms and meditation spaces, a japanese hanging scroll by Kanshū Hasegawa presents the Zen phrase "Kankan Rōgetsu Jin" (Look, the Last Month Is Ending) in bold ink calligraphy. Measuring 176cm tall and mounted on silk with wooden roller ends, this kakejiku is suited for a tokonoma, tea ceremony decor, or minimalist hanging where wabi sabi decor and Buddhist monk art are appreciated. Hand-rolled and boxed in wood, the vintage scroll retains signs of age—stains, wrinkles and patina—that underscore its authenticity and quiet mindfulness quality for seasonal display or as a thoughtful mindfulness gift for contemplative interiors today.

About the calligraphy

Kanshū Hasegawa trained under Roshi Fujii Kaido and created tea utensils and calligraphy that reflect the fusion of Zen and tea. The inscription—drawn from the Kidōroku tradition—evokes the passage of time and invites present-moment attention. As Japanese calligraphy executed by a Buddhist monk, the brushwork emphasizes simplicity, rhythm, and restrained energy appropriate for a tea room or meditation alcove.

Materials and condition

The piece is ink on paper mounted to silk with wooden components and lacquer finish. The listing notes visible aging: stains, wrinkles and surface dirt that accompany an authentic vintage scroll. These characteristics align with wabi sabi decor sensibilities and emphasize the piece’s history; no restoration details beyond what is described are provided.

Display recommendations

Sized for a vertical tokonoma or narrow wall, the scroll is traditionally displayed during December or year-end gatherings but can be used whenever the host wishes to underscore mindfulness. To protect the kakejiku, hang away from direct sunlight, high humidity, or active heating sources. The wooden box allows safe, compact storage when the scroll is rotated out of seasonal display.

What’s included

The hanging scroll as described, mounted and boxed in wood, with natural signs of age. Materials listed in the specifications reflect the original construction: ink, paper, silk, wood, lacquer.

FAQ

A: Yes. The scroll is a traditional kakejiku by a recognized monk and is sized and composed for tokonoma display in tea rooms and meditation spaces.

Q: Does the scroll have damage?

A: The listing reports stains, wrinkles and dirt consistent with age; these vintage features contribute to its wabi sabi character and do not obscure the calligraphy.

Q: Can the scroll be shipped boxed?

A: The piece is boxed in a wooden box for storage and transport as noted in the specifications.

Q: Is the calligraphy suitable as a mindfulness gift or meditation room art?

A: The Zen phrase and Kanshū Hasegawa’s monk-made calligraphy make it well suited as a mindfulness gift, meditation room art, or minimalist hanging for contemplative interiors.
