Japanese Woodblock Print, Birds Blue sky, Calligraphy Poem, Wall Decor (H19.1in/38cm)

Reissued in the Showa era as a hand-printed woodblock, a depiction of three wild geese descending toward a brilliant full moon appears in this Japanese woodblock print in a vertical tanzaku composition by Utagawa Hiroshige. The narrow-format ukiyo-e art includes an inscribed waka calligraphy poem that speaks of sharing the moonlight rising among the reeds of Naniwa (present-day Osaka). Printed on paper and partially attached to a white backing sheet, the piece measures 19.1 by 13.2 inches with the drawing area 15 by 5.2 inches. It remains in excellent condition, free of dirt or stains, ready for framing or display.

About this Hiroshige print

This re-issue preserves the mood of vintage Japanese art while offering the tactile qualities associated with an authentic woodblock impression. The composition emphasizes nature wall hangings and bird art print themes: three geese descend toward a luminous moon set in a serene blue sky, a motif that reads well in Japandi wall decor and traditional wall art arrangements. The integrated waka calligraphy contributes literary depth and historic context typical of ukiyo-e art.

Materials, size, and display

The work is printed on paper and is partially affixed to a white backing sheet that matches the sheet dimensions listed above. The narrow tanzaku format makes it ideal for slim frames, vertical display areas, or a curated grouping of vintage Japanese art pieces. Because the print is already attached to backing, it can be matted and framed without additional hinging.

Condition and care

Condition is described as excellent with no visible dirt or stains. To preserve the paper and inks, avoid direct sunlight, display in moderate humidity, and use UV-filtering glazing when framing. No restorations or alterations are noted in the supplied information.

Provenance and style

Although the original composition dates to the Edo period by Utagawa Hiroshige, this particular impression is a Showa-era re-issue produced with hand-printing techniques rather than a modern mechanical reproduction. The piece therefore appeals to collectors of authentic woodblock re-issues, fans of Edo period style, and decorators seeking vintage Japanese art for nature-themed interiors.
