Japanese Vintage Wooden Charcoal Container, Kenzan Vase Set

This is a container called a "Sumitori," used for carrying charcoal and cherished over many years. Until about a century ago, charcoal was the primary source of energy in Japan for cooking and heating.

In those days, a charcoal fire was always burning in the "Hibachi" (brazier) in every room. People would boil water in iron kettles to add humidity to the dry air and warm their cold hands over the glowing embers. The Sumitori, filled with charcoal, was always kept by the Hibachi. When the fire grew low, it would be carried to the "Doma" (a traditional earthen-floor kitchen) where a large stock of charcoal was kept for refilling.

Both the interior and exterior are blackened with soot, creating an authentic antique atmosphere of a time-honored Japanese home. While you may use it to store anything you like, we have included a circular Kenzan (spiky frog) and a water tray as a set, allowing you to arrange flowers in a way that complements its rustic, "Wabi" aesthetic.
