Japanese vintage Toy dog doll made of paper, Inu Hariko edo Toyama H4.1in/H10.3cm

This is a traditional toy from Toyama Prefecture made using a technique called 張子HARIKO papier-mâché, which involves layering multiple sheets of paper. Known as the “古代犬 Ancient Dog,” it is a representative piece of folk toys dating back to the late Edo period. It is a simple, charming clay bell featuring a black-rimmed dog adorned with a colorful neckband (red, wisteria, peach, yellow) and a bell. It was crafted as an object of folk belief and as a lucky charm. This piece was made during the Showa era. Some of the paint has peeled off.
Its unique, distinctive atmosphere is popular in Japan as a kind of original character—relaxed and cute.
