Japanese vintage small pottery bell NOH MASK KOOMOTE doll ornament Paper weight, Christmas Ornaments small bell H3.9×2.2in/H10×5.7cm.
A ceramic bell. It is recommended as a Christmas ornament or a New Year's ornament.
In Japan, it is called "earthen bell" and has been loved since ancient times.
It is made of unglazed ceramic and painted, and has been made as a local toy, a charm against evil spirits, and a good luck charm since the Edo period (1603-1868). Japanese local toys are also traditional local crafts. They are often made from local specialties, and often have motifs related to religious beliefs or local animals.
This motif is a small Noh mask.
The small mask is a young woman's mask with a golden hat on top. The word 宮島Miyajima is carved in Kanji characters on the back.
Miyajima is a place of prayer where the island itself has long been worshipped as a god. Itsukushima Shrine stands on the sea, with a spectacular view of the lush sea in front and the green primeval forest of Mt. 厳島神社Itsukushima Shrine is the only Noh stage in Japan built on the sea.
The definition of beauty has always changed over time, but during the Heian period (794-1185), Japanese women were favored to have slightly plump cheeks, small mouths, and long, narrow eyes. During the Heian period, Japanese women had slightly plump cheeks, small mouths, and elongated eyes. This bell illustrates these characteristics well.
