Mandarin duck is popular birds in Japan for its male feathers which turns to colorful colors in winter. A lot of artists prefer to create works with motif of them. They are also famous as birds which gets along with its partner for a long. But this is not biologically inaccurate.
This piece was made of tin alloy as a weight for calligraphy. It has been carefully handled and used over a long period, resulting in a worn surface that has developed a beautiful patina.
