Japanese vintage SETO ware kiln craft jar flower vase with kanji, Tokkuri , Forgery of a Momoyama period vase H9.6×6.3in/H24.5×16cm.
This is a fake pot from the Momoyama period. This type of pot was mass-produced in Japan following a certain incident. The incident in question was that in 1959, a pot made in the Kamakura period was designated as an important cultural property of Japan as a Seto ware. However, it was later discovered that the pot was actually made by a potter around 1937, not in the Kamakura period, leading to a controversy over the revocation of its cultural property status. Following this, many pots imitating it were produced in Japan.
Although it is not a Kamakura-period vase, it is a unique and distinctive piece featuring the characteristic glaze of Seto ware. It is inscribed with the Chinese characters for “Eiryaku 2” (1294).
Seto ware, from which this pottery was made, is a traditional Japanese pottery that has been produced since the Heian period (794-1192), but pottery production flourished during the Edo period. It is said that the pottery originally started as unglazed pottery, and in the Edo period (1603-1867), it began to incorporate porcelain techniques. This is an early example of that Seto ware porcelain. The glaze has fine penetrations, and because it is fired with charcoal, uneven kiln temperatures and other factors lead to variations in color. Since the artist did not try to create an artificial appearance, there is a unique fluctuation that one does not get tired of.
