Japanese vintage Seto Karatsu ware Hira chawan "KAWA KUJURA whale skin" tea bowl for tea ceremony White glaze H2.4×W6.1in/H6×15.6cm.

This type of teacup is called 瀬戸 Seto 唐津 Karatsu because the appearance of this type of teacup, which is covered with a white glaze with a lot of feldspar on a rather coarse white clay, resembles that of 志野 Shino and other Seto type teacups.
Characteristic features are the cracks in the glaze throughout and the black glaze on the mouth. The triangular mark on the inside is daringly left unpainted to make a point.
It is called this because this distinctive design resembles the coloring of the skin and body of a whale, called "KAWA KUJURA(whale skin)".
Although it closely resembles an Edo period tea bowl stored in the National Museum, this item was made a little later than the Edo period, during the Taisho period.
The color of the clay also has an atmosphere of aging, making it an elegant tea bowl. Since it is a flat tea bowl, it is also a recommended shape for summer.

Made by a pottery master "山口錠鉄", Yamaguchi Jotetsu (1920 -1999). Store in a original box with signature.
