In Japan, they are called earthen bells and have been loved for a long time.

This motif is a mask called おかめOkame or お多福Otafuku.
お多福Otafuku is the mask of a plump woman, and originally in ancient times, it was believed that a woman with a fat and blessed physique would ward off evil spirits and signify a certain kind of "beauty. It is also said to bring good fortune.
