Japanese vintage pair of big scissors for wool shaving, Hokkaido new land pioneers tool in the beginning of 20th century with Kanji, H11.8in
This big scissors were used by pioneers who went to Hokkaido, the north island of Japan in the beginning of the 20th century. Sheep was not popular cattle in Japan for following reasons. Japanese was not in the habit of eating meat. The climate is not suitable for them in the main island. There were not grassland to feed them. But as the fight began against Russia in 1904, Japan army noticed the demand on wool for going on an expedition to colder areas. Japanese government encouraged people to immigrate to Hokkaido, where is vast and cool enough to cultivate land and keep cattle as cow and sheep. It is signed in Kanji characters.
This pair of scissors was modeled after one an American instructor brought. Though it looks too big for Japanese people's hand at that time and clippers were already common in foreign farms , it has a sort of functional beauty and well preserved as pioneers handles them carefully.
