"鍾馗Zhong Kui" is the name of a god who came from China during the Heian period in Japan. He is said to have the power to ward off plague and achieve academic success.
When the sixth emperor of the Tang Dynasty, Xuanzong, fell ill, a person appeared who stood at the bedside of Xuanzong's dream and conquered the evil demons in his dream. When Xuanzong asked who he was, he told him that he was Zhong Kui, that he had taken the examination to become an official during the Wudoku period (618-626), but had failed, and that he had committed suicide in the palace out of shame, and that he had come to repay the kindness of the Emperor Gaozu, who had given him a good burial. He told this to Xuanzong. When Xuanzong woke up, his illness was completely gone. When Xuanzong asked a painter to draw a picture of the Zhong Kui, the picture looked exactly like the Zhong Kui in his dream, and the picture of the Zhong Kui was used to ward off evil spirits at the New Year.

Though a signature and a stamp of the painter is on the right bottom, the details of this artist are unknown.

This is called KAKEJIKU a hanging scroll, and is a calligraphy or oriental painting on silk or paper.
In Japan, masters store various types of hanging scrolls. And he hangs a drawing scroll which represents the season and calligraphy scrolls which implies his feelings or message to his guests.
Another good point is that it can be rolled up and stored compactly.
