This small lantern was used at festivals. The words “関所 Sekisho Festival” are written in the center. Sekisho refers to checkpoints established in ancient times at important roads or borders, functioning like government offices to inspect travelers and their belongings. The family crest motif depicted on the side is a peony flower. Peonies are said to have been introduced to Japan from China during the Nara period. Considered the king of flowers and a symbol of wealth, they were particularly favored by the nobility.
The colors have deepened with age, resulting in a more subdued tone. There are small holes and other signs of wear from aging, but overall it is in good condition.
