Japanese vintage hand paint and block printing art of Tale of Genji/Dragonfly with Kanji calligraphy garden H8.1×W12.2in/H20.5×W31cm.
It is based on one of the tales of the Heian period, “The Tale of Genji”. The Tale of Genji describes the life and love of a nobleman in the Heian period.
This tale is called “蜻蛉 KAGEROU(Dragonfly)". The central character in this tale is a princess named 浮舟Ukifune, whose niece is the main character, Hikaru Genji. Although she is the daughter of the crown prince, she leads an unhappy life because she is not the child of his regular wife.
She is the daughter of the crown prince, but she is not the son of his legitimate wife, so she leads an unhappy life, and then, as a result of an unwanted life, she is married to two noble men, but she is unable to bear the complicated love triangle and dies.
When one of the two men learns of her death later, he reads a poem about her, now weeping with grief.
First, let's look for the dragonfly of the title. In ancient Japanese literature, dragonflies have been used as a metaphor for the weak and fragile.
The dragonfly is probably superimposed on this princess who has thrown herself away.
A bridge is depicted, and if you look closely at the pine trees and other trees growing on the bridge, you will see hidden kanji characters. Although they are not clearly legible, they represent some of the characters of the poem.
It is a beautiful painting in which a uniquely Japanese way of expression can be seen.
