Japanese vintage hand paint and block printing art of Tale of Genji/Buddha Dharma with Kanji Sutra Flower H8.1×W12.2in/H20.5×W31cm.

It is based on one of the tales of the Heian period, “The Tale of Genji”. The Tale of Genji describes the life and love of a nobleman in the Heian period.
The tale is called “御法MINORI ”. The meaning of this word is a respectful way of saying Buddha Dharma.
This tale describes a scene in which the main character, Hikaru Genji, is killed by his regular wife, Murasaki no Ue, who has been his companion for many years. Hikaru Genji reads it as a grief poem. Before her death, Murasaki no Ue also asked her grandchildren to occasionally offer cherry blossoms and other flowers to the Buddha as if they were me.

There is a scroll with the flowers depicted in the center, and an inkstone box.
This shows that Murasaki no Ue was very religious about Buddhism. The setting of this scene is autumn, and its autumnal atmosphere and the elegant coloring of the purple tops, which evoke the beauty of the purple tops, give a sense of serenity to this story, even though it is one about death. It seems as if it represents the freshness of her life as a wife, mother, and a woman who lived strongly and gently through her life.
