Japanese vintage hand paint and block printing art of Tale of Genji/The Phantom with Kanji cherry blossom peony H8.1×W12.2in/H20.5×W31cm.
It is based on one of the tales of the Heian period, “The Tale of Genji”. The Tale of Genji describes the life and love of a nobleman in the Heian period.
The tale is called “明石Akashi” (Akashi is the name of a town). In this tale, the main character, 光源氏 Hikaru Genji, dreams of his own father when he is exiled from the capital and living a life so bitter that he wants to die. His father tells him that this suffering is still nothing serious, that he has been adored by the people and ruled the country, but that he is still suffering even now that he is dead.
In the midst of all this, his father sends him to move to another city, Akashi. He is entertained by a man who comes to pick him up by boat and offers to marry his daughter. He and his daughter, the princess of Akashi, are drawn to each other through their hearts.
The overall coloring is somewhat sad and melancholy. Depicted in the center is a stringed instrument called a biwa. Waves are beautifully depicted in the background.
On the left is a rather bright and beautiful beach, which is probably the coast of Akashi. The painting evokes a sense of tranquility.
