This is based on the motif of “狛犬 komainu,” guardian deities enshrined in Japanese shrines. Its origins lie in the two lion statues placed in front of Buddhist statues, which are thought to have evolved into the shape of komainu. Buddhism was transmitted to Japan via China and Korea from India. It is said that the Korean name “Korae-inu” was changed to “komainu” in Japan.
Interestingly, Shinto and Buddhism have coexisted in Japan in a blended form.
This lion has a Kanji character signature engraved on the back.
It is made of celadon and has an elegant atmosphere.
