This drum is from the 日蓮 Nichiren sect. It is inscribed with the words "南妙法蓮華経 Namu Myoho Renge Kyo."
The drums used in the Nichiren sect are primarily "uchiwa daiko" (fan drums), Buddhist implements that are struck to set the rhythm when chanting the mantra "Namu Myoho Renge Kyo." Shaped like a fan, this single-sided drum is also known as the "Hokke drum," and is an essential part of ceremonies such as the "Oeshiki" and chants by believers.
This drum is in good condition and ready to be used immediately. Its large size is rare and impressive.

Since the introduction of Buddhism to Japan, various sects have emerged. One of these is the Nichiren sect. While there are some differences in understanding, the sect aspires to a peaceful society in which everyone can manifest their innate Buddha nature and this world (the Saha world) can become a Pure Land.
However, this drum's date is clearly marked, and it also records an ironic bit of history.
The date is written as 1940, the 2600th year of the Imperial calendar.
The 2,600th Anniversary of the Founding of Japan (Kigen ni Senroppyaku Nen Kinen Gyoji) refers to a series of events held in 1940 (Showa 15) to celebrate 2,600 years since the accession to the throne of Emperor Jimmu in the Imperial calendar. It is said that in Japan at this time, the 2,600th anniversary commemorations were held on a grand scale to dispel the gloom and oppression felt by the people during the Sino-Japanese War.
Contrary to original wishes, this is also a history of how even religion, during wartime, became a tool to boost people's morale.
Furthermore, it is believed that Japan was still in the Jomon period 2,400 years ago, so we must not forget that this was a fabrication to boost people's morale and create a sense of unity.
