Japanese vintage BIZEN 達磨Daruma doll statue, cool ceramic statue Buddhist monk priest ZEN master art ornament hand craft with Kanji sigunature 1950s H8.7in/H22cm.

The motif "達磨Daruma" is a Buddhist monk who introduced Buddhism from India to China. He is called "Zen master".
Many legends and anecdotes remain about Daruma.

He was born in India and devoted most of his life to Buddhist practice in India. It is said that he walked all over India in his later years after his master's death and introduced Buddhism to China.
A famous story is the conversation that took place when Bodhidharma was invited by the emperor of the time when he went to China.
The emperor asked Bodhidharma, "You have built temples, made Buddhist statues, copied many sutras, and cherished Buddhism.
The emperor asked Bodhidharma, "What merit do you think there is in these actions?" Bodhidharma replied, "No merit.
All of these things are useful deeds that are manifested in form, but they are not truly meritorious.
The emperor asks, "What do you mean by true merit and virtue?"
Daruma says, "Nothing, nothing, neither holy nor lowly.
The emperor replied, "Who are you to talk to me in anger? The emperor replied, "Who are you?
The emperor responds, "I am not a teacher.
What is the true heart of the person who responded, "I don't know. What is the true heart of the person who responded, "I know, I don't know. Good, bad. Perhaps it is to get out of the two-word argument of "saint" and "ordinary person.

In Japan, dolls of Daruma have been preserved in various forms. This is an impressive figure staring firmly at something. Despite the fact that it is just a standing figure, you can feel the flow. The pottery known as Bizen ware has a unique clay color that gives it a taste. Furthermore, this old Bizen pottery has deepened in color over time and changed even cooler. This old Bizen is very popular in Japan.
It is interesting to look at this doll and think about the real-life Daruma monks of the past.
This is not a major damage, but there is chips on the face. It is inscribed in Kanji characters on the back.
