Japanese small pottery bell ONI demon doll talisman ornament Paper weight, Ornaments Japanese vintage small bell H2.2in/5.5cm.

This is a pottery bell. It is also cute and unique and recommended as a Christmas ornament or New Year figurine.
In Japan, they are called earthen bells and have been loved for a long time.
It is an item painted on unglazed pottery that has been made since the Edo period (1603-1868) as a local toy, a charm against evil, or a good omen. Local toys in Japan are also traditional crafts of the region. Many of them use local products and are modeled after objects associated with religious beliefs or local animals.

The motif is an 鬼 ONI /ogre. While many people may associate ogres with fear and evil, in Japan, they have various meanings.
They have been perceived as spirits of the dead, or beings connected to gods and ancestral spirits, and have also been used as a term to refer to people who do not submit to authority. Additionally, in folk arts and legends, demons are depicted as villains, but they are also worshipped as gods or portrayed as beings that bring good fortune to people.
This bell is meant to ward off evil and misfortune by carrying such a demon as a talisman.
This is an interesting example of Japan's unique sensibility.
