In Japan, they are called earthen bells and have been loved for a long time.
It is an item painted on unglazed pottery that has been made since the Edo period (1603-1868) as a local toy, a charm against evil, or a good omen. This is a double-sided representation of the 金剛力士蔵Kongorikishi statue (Kongorikishi Zo), which stands and glares at the gate of a temple. They are believed to serve as guardian deities of Buddhism, preventing the invasion of enemies.
One of them has its mouth open and the other has its mouth closed. This is called 阿吽A-Un. It has various meanings, but it means the beginning and the end.
