This unique sake set has been used since the Edo period for *ozashiki-asobi* (traditional banquet games played with geisha). Known as *Yūkyō-hai* (or *Zakyō-hai*)—meaning "playful sake cups"—and commonly referred to by the nickname "Te no Naru Hō e" (Towards the Sound of Clapping Hands), this set consists of nesting *masu* (square wooden cups) and dice.

The cups are small, designed specifically for drinking sake.

Players take turns rolling the dice in a clockwise direction. The game continues until someone can no longer drink (effectively "giving up"), at which point they lose.


Beyond just drinking sake, the game involves singing and dancing, making it a lively pastime that geisha have enjoyed for generations.

The small cups feature markings corresponding to the dice faces or illustrations of a person dancing while blindfolded.

These designs stem from the story of *Chūshingura*, a famous historical tale of vendetta often performed in Kabuki. The story centers on a retainer whose lord was forced to commit *seppuku* (ritual suicide) following an incident, resulting in the dissolution of their domain. Suspected by the Shogunate of plotting a rebellion, the retainer was placed under close surveillance. To deceive his watchers, he played the part of a dissolute man—spending his nights drinking and playing blindfolded tag with courtesans—thereby successfully evading scrutiny and ultimately achieving his revenge.

The figure dancing while blindfolded represents the protagonist of this story.
