Japanese pottery bell Monkey with a bell animal doll with Kanji 誉田宮 sacred horse Paper weight, Ornaments Japanese vintage H3.9in/10cm.
This is a pottery bell. It is also cute and unique and recommended as a Christmas ornament or New Year figurine.
In Japan, they are called earthen bells and have been loved for a long time.
It is an item painted on unglazed pottery that has been made since the Edo period (1603-1868) as a local toy, a charm against evil, or a good omen. Local toys in Japan are also traditional crafts of the region. Many of them use local products and are modeled after objects associated with religious beliefs or local animals.
This is an amulet doll from a historical shrine in Osaka. The motif is a white Mouse with a gold hammer. This hammer is a lucky motif that is said to bring you what you want if you fall on it.
The body is decorated with the name “誉田宮 Konda-miya” in relief. This means 誉田Konda- 八幡宮 Hachimangu Shrine. The shrine was built in 559, and in the Nara period (710-794), a Buddhist priest named 行基 Gyoki built a temple on the shrine grounds. The shrine is also famous for the harnesses and other items that were made using the most advanced technology of the time and stored at the shrine.
This place is still enshrined as a shrine of good luck and good fortune, and is believed to be good for safe childbirth, protection from bad luck, and good fortune.
