Japanese old "SUISEKI", scholars stone, indoor viewing stone, block shaped, with a hand carved pedestal Power stone H2.7 x W7.4in
"Suiseki" is a Japanese culture or hobby of viewing stones indoors.
This culture came from China in the 12th century, and getting popular among noble and samurai society.
They preferred and collected stones which resembles mountain and made a small landscape scenery in a tray filled with water. It has something in common with "bonsai" and "suiseki" are also displayed in "tokonoma", an alcove in a traditional Japanese room where art pieces are displayed.
This "suiseki" has a unique shape eroded over a long period of time by the running water of the canyon. Just as zen teaches, this suiseki shows there is no other way but to accept nature.
In spite of a hard rock, very smooth curves remind of organic objects. It may have a common with Isamu Noguchi's work since Its cold and smooth surface makes the viewer feel compelled to touch it. Above all else, its proportions are marvelous.
The pedestal was carved to fit exactly the bottom of the stone.
