Japanese Monkey Incense Container, Vintage Ceramic Kogo, SignedJP

Delicately modeled in ceramic and signed by the maker, this small piece carries the charm of a Japanese monkey incense container designed for display and gentle use. Handcrafted details show a seated monkey motif with subtle glazing and a compact footprint that suits a shelf, tokonoma, or tea room. Originally a kōgō for holding incense or kōboku, it now functions as a small trinket box, collectible art decor, or tabletop incense holder. It arrives gift-wrapped in a paper box and is in very good condition, making it an approachable vintage kogo for enthusiasts of Japanese pottery and traditional home accents.

Design & character

The piece reads as handcrafted ceramic art with a clear monkey motif statue rendered in low relief and hand-painted glazing. Proportions are compact—perfect for a mantle, entry shelf, or a quiet corner in a zen room decor scheme. As a ceramic animal sculpture with a signed base, it registers as collectible art decor while retaining the practical scale and proportions of a traditional tea accessory.

Use in tea and home

Rooted in the kōgō tradition, this item aligns with Japanese tea accessory practices where a small container holds fragrant pieces during chanoyu. Today it works equally well as a tabletop incense holder when paired with paper incense sheets, or as a small trinket box for rings and pins. Its modest size and stable base make it suitable for everyday display without dominating a tea alcove or shelf.

Compatibility with incense and bundles

If you choose to pair the kogō with paper incense from the same listing, the compact interior accommodates single folded sheets or short sticks and the included metal clip sold with the incense packs. The shop’s paper incense options—floral warmth, elegant agarwood, deep citrus, mellow sandalwood, and smoky comfort—complement the ceramic tones and add a ritual moment when used near the piece.

Care, provenance, and collecting notes

Handle the ceramic with care: avoid sudden temperature changes and store on a soft surface when not displayed. The artist’s mark on the bottom authenticates the signedJP listing detail, and the piece’s very good condition makes it suitable for collectors of vintage kogo and lovers of handcrafted ceramic art. As a unique gift for her or for someone who appreciates traditional home accents, the monkey motif and compact design make the item memorable.
