This box is made of black urushi lacquer and gold.
In Japan, these boxes are used to store important sutras in Buddhist temples.

The picture of flowers on the top is a Japanese family crest called a "peony crest.The peony is a flower native to China and has been considered the most noble flower as the king of the hundred flowers. It was introduced to Japan around the 8th century and was used as a family crest by the Fujiwara clan, a powerful aristocrat, and was favored by the Heian nobility.
It is said that the origin of the word "peony," "furyu," comes from the king's silky petals overlapping each other and rounded in shape.
It is also said to symbolize wealth.
On the other hand, the language of flowers also includes the meaning of "shame. It is said that the peony has something to do with the aesthetics of Asian profundity as seen from the West.
