This box is made of black urushi lacquer and gold.
In Japan, these boxes are used to store important sutras in Buddhist temples.
The box is lacquered in black outside and covered with gold leaves inside. The crest on the top is painted with technique of makie, fixing gold powders and leaves with lacquer. It is designed in the likeness of eight wisteria blossoms and called as "Yatsu fuji" which is most commonly used in temples.
Although the abrasion on the interior gold leaf suggests it has been used for many years, the exterior is in such pristine condition it appears brand new, indicating it has been handled with great care.
