This Japanese maekake apron is a vintage indigo apron crafted from sturdy boro cotton fabric, traditionally worn as a waist apron for workers in sake breweries and shops. The Japanese maekake apron delivers authentic Japanese heritage apparel designed to protect the waist while showcasing Aizome indigo dyeing techniques. Measuring approximately 28.7 inches high by 17.1 inches wide (73 cm × 43.5 cm) with a 78.7-inch (200 cm) string, this cotton waist protector weighs just 4.9 ounces (138 grams), making it durable yet comfortable for daily use.
The apron features Kanji characters reading "吉野桜" (Yoshinozakura) and "優等清酒" (premium sake), representing the Yoshinozakura brand of Japanese sake. This traditional workwear apron was historically worn by rice dealers, sake brewers, and shopkeepers as part of their uniform and for advertising since the Meiji period (1868-1912). Its thick cotton fabric dyed with deep indigo hues through Aizome indigo dyeing ensures long-lasting color and strength.
This vintage indigo apron combines functionality with cultural significance: the cord tied around the navel helps maintain body balance, while the heavy cotton fabric protects the waist during laborious tasks. The apron is in good condition for its age, showing natural stains and wear consistent with authentic Japanese vintage clothing.
