This authentic Japanese lion mask, a hand carved sculpture from the 1800s, serves as a ceremonial dance mask used in traditional lion dance performances to ward off evil spirits. This antique wood mask features a lacquered wooden mask crafted from solid wood with intricate details that capture the powerful and dignified atmosphere of the festival lion head. Measuring approximately 12.2 inches high, 13.6 inches wide, and 11.4 inches deep (31 cm × 34.5 cm × 29 cm), this vintage shishi mask weighs about 56.9 ounces (1617 grams) and includes a large cotton cloth measuring 59.1 inches (150 cm), allowing a person to wear it fully during performances. The mouth opens and closes, and the ears move to enhance the lifelike presence of this oriental lion sculpture, a rare example of old Japan wood art used in Shinto shrine mask traditions.

This lacquered wooden mask was traditionally worn during Japanese festival art events like the Shishi-Mai lion dance, which dates back to the Muromachi period (1333-1573) and spread through the Edo period (1603-1868). The dance is performed to bring good fortune and protect communities by warding off evil spirits. The cloth covering attached to the mask allows multiple performers to embody the lion’s movements, creating a vibrant cultural experience.
