This large cotton dyed cloth is a re-production of an old dyed fabric from the Showa era. It's deadstock, unused, and in excellent condition. The striking Hannya and carp motifs make a striking wall hanging.
It's made of 100% cotton and is a slightly thicker fabric with no transparency.
It can be used in a variety of ways, such as making a noren (shop curtain) or draping it over a sofa. It's unused and in excellent condition.
The Noh mask motif is called a 般若 Hannya, and is said to depict a woman transformed into a demon. However, this mask does not simply represent anger; the upper and lower parts of the face are said to represent the duality of the human heart (human sadness and sorrow). In Buddhism, wisdom is not about knowing much, but about being able to accept things as they are. This mask directly expresses this duality of human nature.
Additionally, a carp climbing a waterfall is considered a sign of transformation into a dragon. Therefore, it represents remarkable success in business, academics, or other areas.
Understanding the meaning of the motif adds even more depth to the piece.
