Japanese Furniture antique interior architectural screen,"kumiko, wooden framework" for a sliding screen, shoji, H38.8×17.1in/H98.5×43.5cm

This is the framework for a kumiko shoji. “Shoji” refers to the paper- or glass-covered panels used in Japanese-style sliding doors and windows, while “kumiko” is a traditional Japanese woodworking technique creating intricate wooden lattice patterns. This was used for a slightly smaller sliding door fitted with glass. Its design consists of two parts, each formed by precisely assembling small wooden pieces without adhesive, nails, or screws to create geometric patterns. Its stability and strength derive entirely from the precision of the cuts and the friction at the joints, achieved through the craftsman's meticulous technique.
