Japanese Furniture antique interior architectural screen,"kumiko, wooden framework" for a sliding screen, shoji, H36.2×16.1in/H92×41.3cm
This is a framework of "kumiko shoji", "shoji" is Japanese interior sliding panel or window covered with paper or glass and "kumiko" is a traditional Japanese woodworking technique used to create intricate wooden latticework. This was used for a sliding window with a glass. Its design is a two-part composition, with each geometric pattern which are created by precisely fitting together tiny, interlocking wooden pieces without the use of nails, screws. The stability and strength come entirely from the precision of the cuts and the friction of the joinery.completed through the artisan's meticulous technique.
One of four panels salvaged from an old Japanese house.
It does not include a glass. Only the band-like part (on the reverse side) where the glass is inserted has been repaired with new wood.
