Japanese Byobu Gold Screen: Background dividers for dolls, etc W41.7in/106cm

This is a Japanese furnishing known as a *byōbu* (folding screen). Designed to serve as a backdrop for items such as dolls, it is relatively small in size.

The surface is crafted from beautiful gold-colored paper, while the edges are trimmed with fabric featuring a small floral pattern. The frame is made of wood and lacquer and is fitted with metal hardware. It can be folded away for storage and stands upright on its own when displayed.

There is some discoloration in the center due to fading, as well as one area where the color appears dull; however, there are no holes or significant damage, and it is ready for immediate use.

Folding screens were originally used to partition rooms or decorate spaces; they consist of paper or other materials mounted onto a wooden frame, designed with a structure that allows them to fold.

Believed to have originated in China, the folding screen has a long history, existing as early as the Han Dynasty (206 BCE – 220 CE) as a device to block the wind. In Japan, the production of numerous folding screens—featuring styles ranging from ink wash paintings to richly colored, vibrant designs—flourished by the Muromachi period (1336–1573).

It is in good condition, but there are stains and scratches over time. There is discoloration in the center due to sun exposure, and one area appears dull in color. There is also discoloration on the back. There is no major damage, such as holes, that would affect usability.
