It is said that the 重箱jubako first appeared in the Muromachi period (1333-1573), but it was not until the Edo period (1603-1868) that it became commonplace. In particular, samurai families and feudal lords used to carry dishes in maki-e lacquer-work stacked boxes when they went "hunting" or "cherry blossom viewing.

This maki-e tiered box is a top-quality item made in Ishikawa Prefecture, known for its Wajima lacquerware. Wajima lacquerware is characterized by the application of multiple layers of lacquer, resulting in strong, beautiful items. This requires a great deal of effort, making it a truly luxurious item.

The outside is black, the inside red. The lid features a detailed family crest in gold.

This luxury item is coated with a thick, luxurious coat of lacquer across the entire surface, with gold accents around the edges.

The family crest is called a circle with four eyes. The motif is a type of dyed fabric. The inside of the circle, known as the "four eyes," is thought to symbolize fertility and bravery.
