This Japanese antique temple gong is a rare 1700s Edo period wanikuchi bronze bell, crafted using traditional lost wax bronze craft techniques. The signed lotus design gong measures approximately 6.5 inches wide and weighs 29 ounces, making it an authentic bronze temple gong with historical significance. Known as a crocodile mouth gong due to its unique shape resembling a reptile's open mouth, this antique Buddhist gong served as a temple entrance gong in Buddhist altars and temples.

The wanikuchi bronze bell features an intricate lotus flower relief at its center, surrounded by a detailed flower-like pattern that distinguishes it from other historic Japanese gongs. The signature of Hashimoto Jizaemon, a resident of present-day Kochi Prefecture, is engraved on the surface, adding provenance and authenticity to this decorative antique gong. Despite a minor crack on the back, the thickness of the bronze ensures durability and no risk of breakage.
