This Japanese antique temple bell is a large bronze gong from the Edo period, measuring 18.1 inches (46 cm) in height and weighing 30.4 pounds (13.8 kg). Crafted in 1829, this Buddhist meditation bell was used as a temple hanging bell to mark time and spread the voice of Buddha, symbolizing peace and happiness. The bell’s thick bronze body produces a deep, resonant tone that enhances any zen garden art or Buddhist altar setup.
Featuring intricate details such as the "Ryuzu" dragon head handle for hanging and 36 "Chi" studs arranged in four blocks of nine, this vintage bronze bell carries authentic inscriptions including the chant "Namu Amida Butsu," expressing devotion to Amida Buddha. The striking spot, or "Enza," is adorned with a lotus flower design, adding to its spiritual significance. Over two centuries, verdigris has naturally patinated the surface, underscoring its historical value as an ancient ritual tool.
This inscribed Buddhist bell served as a historical temple gong in Hyōgo Prefecture and survived a fire during Japan's modernization era, which warped its shape but did not diminish its sound quality or cultural importance. It remains in good condition with expected aging marks such as rust scratches and dirt but is fully functional as a Buddhist altar gong or decorative antique Japanese sculpture.
