Works by a 信楽焼 Shigaraki-ware potter. Each of these five beautiful small plates is handmade, so the patterns, shapes, and hues vary slightly from piece to piece.
Shigaraki clay, which contains feldspar, has a coarse texture. This creates a rustic charm that highlights the natural character of the clay.
Additionally, a natural glaze forms during firing. Ash from burning firewood melts and settles onto the clay, creating areas of blue-green or yellow-green glassy glaze.
The irregular patterns on these plates are also created using techniques that embrace such natural accidents, giving them a modern yet warm feel.
Furthermore, three of the plates have areas where chips have been repaired. This too adds to the plates' charm.
The natural reddish hue of the clay is a product of chance, making each piece truly one-of-a-kind.
