This is a Chōshi, a traditional Japanese vessel for pouring and serving sake (rice wine), crafted from cast iron. Although it may resemble a Tetsubin (iron kettle) at first glance, it is not designed for boiling water. Key differences include the large, open aperture at the top of the spout and the lacquered wooden lid. While it is not a boiling kettle, the Chōshi can be gently warmed over charcoal in a brazier (Hibachi) to serve hot sake .

Its aesthetic appeal lies in the beautiful Arabesque carving around the body, which harmonizes perfectly with the crest of a pair of opposed Myoga (Japanese ginger) buds on the lid. The Myoga motif is often used as a family or temple crest because the Japanese pronunciation of "Myoga" sounds similar to a Buddhist term meaning "the unseen divine protection or blessing received from Buddha."

The lid's knob is crafted from metal and shaped like the Shippō mon (Seven Treasures motif), a pattern symbolizing eternal prosperity and harmony. This detail suggests the Chōshi was intended for use during special ceremonial occasions or formal sake gatherings.

There are visible rust inside and lacquer's peeling off on the back of the lid as shown in a picture.
